懿光堂发展，是在初移殖于加拉知坡者的杨向道、黄贤瑜、黄回灿、陈金才、陈家才、薛生瑜和姚朝凤七个家庭，于1936年组织董事会；议决建筑教堂与学校于吴生发所奉献之一英亩土地上。
当时建筑是教会和学校共用的。不久后也建筑教师兼传道之住屋。以后因学生人数加增，就另建一同样大之建筑物为教室。联军光复后，教会与学校就分开办理。
新教堂在1971年4月24日落成。
